For 600 million farmers and a billion-plus citizens, those four months, June through September, determine if fields will turn green or \u00a0 crack under sun, whether prices will stay stable or spike at the mandis, if the economy will hum or strain. And in 2026, that wait carries more anxiety than usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meteorologists, climate scientists and government planners are all watching the same signal flashing from the Paci\ufb01c Ocean: a Super El Nino is forming, possibly the strongest, the world has seen in decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is El Nino, anyway?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Why does a warming event in the Paci\ufb01c Ocean halfway around the world determine whether a farmer in Vidarbha can pay back his loan or whether a family in Bundelkhand has enough water until October? Most importantly, what can farmers, policy makers, and ordinary citizens do about it? This article explains it all simply and practically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Understanding El Ni\u00f1o: The Paci\ufb01c&#8217;s Weather Engine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of the Paci\ufb01c Ocean as a giant bathtub. Normally, winds blow from east to west, pushing warm surface water toward Asia and Australia. This leaves cold, nutrient-rich water upwelling along the South American coast- a condition called \u2018neutral ENSO\u2019. When the trade winds weaken, however, that pool of warm water sloshes back eastward, rising sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the central and eastern Pacific by 0.5\u00b0C or more above normal in the central and eastern Paci\ufb01c. This warming event, known as an El Ni\u00f1o Southern Oscillation (ENSO) warm phase, affects weather systems across the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Super El Ni\u00f1o goes one step further: SST anomalies rise by at least 2\u00b0C above the long-term average in the Ni\u00f1o 3.4 region, causing extreme and global weather disturbances across six continents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How El Ni\u00f1o Impacts India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Core Impact: Indian Summer Monsoon and El Ni\u00f1o&#8217;s Grip<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The southwest monsoon is the lifeline for Indian agriculture as it brings roughly 70% of the Indian annual rainfall (about 870 mm over the LPA) during the months of June to September. Approximately 60% of Indian agricultural land is rain-fed, thus directly relying on the four months of rain. Any significant shortfall cascades fast and hard through fields, markets, dams and household budgets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o disrupts this by shifting the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and weakening the moisture-laden winds that drive the Indian monsoon. This result is typically a delayed onset, erratic distribution or an outright deficit, or all three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Regional Impacts: Who Bears the Brunt?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o is not uniformly experienced all over India. The most vulnerable regions are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maharashtra (Marathwada and Vidarbha): Historically, India\u2019s El Ni\u00f1o hotspot cotton and soybean belts have endured repeated drought years and rural distress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh: Major rain-fed farming areas with sugarcane, jowar and groundnut production badly impacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan: Central and northwestern India face high drought and heatwave risk. The arid situation can escalate rapidly in the state of Rajasthan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh: Tribal farming communities in these states are highly vulnerable and have limited adaptive capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Agriculture: Kharif, Rabi and the Ripple E\ufb00ect<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The kharif season (June-September) bears the direct blow. Rice, cotton, soybean, pulses, groundnut and sugarcane, which have all been planted during the onset of monsoon, are critically water-dependent plants. A deficient monsoon can drastically reduce yields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most importantly, the pain does not stop with kharif. Poor monsoon rains mean under-filled reservoirs, which then curtail irrigation water available for the rabi season (October \u2013 March).\u00a0 Wheat, mustard and gram- rabi staples are directly affected, further compounding food supply stress into the following year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Horticulture is a highly vulnerable sector. Poor or irregular rainfall can cause the prices of vegetables such as tomatoes, onions and potatoes (which are already known for price volatility) to rise sharply. This was witnessed by the Indians in 2023 when tomato prices touched \u20b9200\/kg for a short while in various cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Water Scarcity, Reservoirs, and Drought<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>India&#8217;s 150+ major reservoirs are the bu\ufb00er between monsoon rainfall and year-round water use. During El Ni\u00f1o years, inadequate monsoon rains leave these reservoirs critically under-\ufb01lled. The states of Maharashtra and Karnataka, which have large reservoirs for irrigation and drinking water, have been particularly affected in previous El Ni\u00f1o years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IMD&#8217;s 2026 forecast projects deficit rainfall across most of the country, barring some northeastern and extreme western regions. If the super EL Ni\u00f1o develops as projected, drought-like conditions in central, western and peninsular India could emerge by August\u2013September 2026, with water scarcity persisting well into 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Economic Consequences: GDP, In\ufb02ation and Rural Distress<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Agriculture accounts for about 16-17% of India&#8217;s GDP and, more crucially, employs or supports over 50% of the country\u2019s workforce. When the monsoon fails, the ripple effects are felt economy-wide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Food In\ufb02ation<\/strong>: The seasonal spikes in vegetable inflation were caused by past El Ni\u00f1o years. The event is expected to push headline CPI by around 20-25 basis points, according to Kotak MF analysts. If the drought is more severe, food in\ufb02ation could rise signi\ufb01cantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>GDP Impact:<\/strong> Research suggests that the combined impact of El Ni\u00f1o and drought could cut GDP growth by 20-65 basis points, mainly due to lower farm incomes, lower rural consumption and lower demand for FMCG products, tractors, two-wheelers and entry-level housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rural Distress:<\/strong> Weakened farm incomes suppress rural purchasing power, reduce demand for non-farm goods and services, and increase fiscal pressures as governments mobilise funds for drought relief spending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, India&#8217;s economy has diversi\ufb01ed considerably. El Ni\u00f1o&#8217;s macroeconomic impact is signi\ufb01cant, but not an automatic catastrophe, due to the resilience of the service sector and the expansion of irrigation infrastructure. The key is not only the average amount of rainfall for a season, but also the timing, intensity, and regional distribution of the rainfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Secondary E\ufb00ects: Heatwaves, Fires, Fisheries, and Health<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>El Ni\u00f1o&#8217;s damage extends beyond fields and mandis:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Heatwaves<\/em>:<\/strong> The number of very hot days and warm nights has been signi\ufb01cantly greater in El Ni\u00f1o years over the past 40 years. Large areas of north and central India are already facing extended heatwaves and hazardous wet-bulb temperatures before the onset of the monsoon in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Forest Fires<\/em>:<\/strong> Dry conditions greatly contribute to forest fire risk in central and northern India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fisheries<\/strong>: The rise in ocean temperature and the decline in upwelling of cold nutrient-rich water affect marine productivity along the west coast of India, affecting the livelihoods of coastal fishing communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Energy Stress<\/strong>: Lower reservoir levels reduce hydroelectric generation just as soaring temperatures drive up electricity demand for cooling, straining India&#8217;s grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Public Health:<\/strong> Heat stress, low river flows leading to water contamination, and crop failures increase health vulnerability, particularly for the elderly, children and outdoor workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>El Ni\u00f1o vs Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD): India&#8217;s Potential Lifeline<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is a seesaw of sea surface temperatures between the western and eastern Indian Ocean. During a positive IOD, the western Indian Ocean is warmer and the eastern part cooler. This pushes more moisture into the Indian subcontinent, often partially offsetting EI Nino suppressive effect on the monsoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Historical examples of IOD- EI Nino interaction<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2019 monsoon season is the most recent example: India received 110% of LPA rainfall, which is well above normal, due to the strong positive IOD offsetting the moderate El Ni\u00f1o. Similarly, in 1997, one of the strongest El Ni\u00f1o years on record, India&#8217;s monsoon was only marginally below normal, in part due to a positive IOD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2026 IOD Status: Limited Relief<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The current IMD data shows neutral IOD conditions over the Indian Ocean, with climate models forecasting that positive IOD conditions may develop towards the end of the southwest monsoon season- likely September or October. This implies that any IOD bu\ufb00er will be too late to support the critical period of June-July-August when most kharif sowing and crop development takes place. The mitigation from IOD in 2026 is likely to be small and delayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This makes 2026 fundamentally di\ufb00erent from 2019. If the El Ni\u00f1o signal prevails, it will likely shape the nature of the monsoon this year, unless a timely positive IOD signal is received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Government and Framer Preparedness: What is being done?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Government Action:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India&#8217;s institutional response to El Ni\u00f1o threats has become much more proactive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Union Agriculture Ministry: Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced at the National Kharif Conference on May 28, 2026, that the Centre is &#8220;fully prepared&#8221; for the impact of El Ni\u00f1o. The Ministry is identifying districts for alternative crop plans, ensuring seed availability, expanding Kisan Credit Card coverage, and directing strict action against spurious seed and fertiliser sellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The long-range forecasting capability of IMD has improved significantly; Early Warning Systems. The April 2026 forecast was made months ahead of the onset of the monsoon, providing states with valuable lead time. Farmers are now being informed about seasonal outlooks, district-level advisories and agrometeorological forecasts through the Kisan portal (farmer.gov.in), Doordarshan Kisan and mobile platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>State-Level Preparedness: States such as Maharashtra, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, which have been the most drought-prone, have set up drought monitoring cells and are coordinating reservoir management and rural employment (MGNREGA) programmes to create water-harvesting infrastructure in advance of the crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion: Preparedness Is the New Resilience<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o has occurred in India in the past. The droughts of 2002, 2009 and 2015 were hard, but the country survived, adapted and in many cases strengthened institutions for the next drought. Early warning systems have been enhanced. There are contingency plans in place. Drought-resistant seeds are available. Crop insurance, though flawed, is available to more farmers than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India is vulnerable, but it is also resilient. The monsoon will come.
